Curriculum

The Art Department offers courses for two degrees, the bachelor of arts (B.A.) and the bachelor of fine arts (B.F.A.). The B.F.A. is given in studio art, while the B.A. is given in both art history and studio art. If you apply for admission to the B.F.A. program, you are required to submit a portfolio for evaluation by the art department by the second semester of the sophomore year.

The programs in art history and studio disciplines are designed to identify and develop your critical awareness, in accordance with the general aim of a liberal education. These program provide you with the opportunity for instruction and practice in the visual arts as preparation for professional pursuits in these fields at the graduate level.

The department has a 110,000 slide collection for use in art history classes; spacious studio facilities for classes in ceramics, printmaking, drawing, photography, and painting; and studio space for senior art majors.

The Denison University Art Gallery houses large Asian and Native American collections, prints, drawings, and paintings from the Renaissance to the Contemporary period. These collections, as well as the exhibitions in the Gallery, are used frequently for study. The seven full-time and one part-time faculty teach 25 courses each semester, with an average introductory class size of 20 - 25 students and upper level courses of less than 15.
