Shaoqian Zhang is a visiting instructor at Denison University. She is currently a PhD candidate in Asian Art History from Northwestern University (Evanston, IL). Her dissertation, "Visualizing the Modern Chinese Party-State: From Calendar Posters to Propaganda Posters," examines how the traditional template of Chinese calendars -- originally intended to promote auspicious circumstances for private families -- was adapted, under the Nationalist regime (1912-49), to create propaganda posters. Her minor, in urban planning of modern capital cities in Europe, Asia and S. America from the 16th to 19th century, explored the complicated relationships between modernity, national identity and social class. She teaches courses on the arts of Asia, Japanese art, visual cultures of modern China and architecture and urban space in East Asia.
