Molecular Systematics of the Ophioglossaceae (Adder's Tongue Fern Family)

As a plant systematist my main research focus is the fern family Ophioglossaceae, commonly called the adder's tongue ferns. I use both molecular and morphological evidence to infer evolutionary patterns and processes within the family and to establish classifications that reflect evolutionary history. Currently my research samples projects throughout the family. I use DNA sequences to examine phylogenetic relationships among species of Botrychium s.s. (the moonworts) and Ophioglossum s.s (the adder's tongue ferns). In the Sceptridium (the evergreen grapeferns), Cheiroglossa palmata, the hand fern, Ophioglossum (Ophioderma) pendulum, the ribbon fern, and Helmithostachys zeylanica I use ISSR markers to address evolutionary relationships among species, the distribution of genetic variation within species, and the interface between species and populations.
