The DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY at DENISON UNIVERSITY invites applications for a tenure-track position at the ASSISTANT PROFESSOR level in Analytical Chemistry, starting Fall 2010 (see the bottom of this page for the full advertisement text)

 Who we are:

Denison University is a residential undergraduate liberal arts college located on a thousand-acre campus in Granville, Ohio (more information on the Granville area can be found online at Granville's Chamber of Commerce. Granville is located within convenient commuting distance of Columbus, the Ohio state capital and a city of with many employment, cultural, and entertainment opportunities. see experiencecolumbus.com

Founded in 1831, Denison has developed a rigorous academic program based on a foundation of intellectual breadth; over four years, Denison students typically take 127 credit hours, distributed more or less equally between general education courses, academic majors, and electives. Our 2100 students pursue majors in 39 areas of study offered by 28 departments and interdisciplinary programs.  Denison prides itself on a culture of close interaction between students and faculty, with a 10:1 student:faculty ratio and an average class size of 20 (introductory science classes typically have fewer than 30 students).  Denison students come from a range of places and backgrounds; fewer than half of our students come from Ohio, and multicultural representation is on the rise, reaching a quarter of the class for this fall's incoming students.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry currently has nine full-time tenure-track faculty representing all major chemical subdisciplines, and has been growing consistently over the past decade with the addition of a second biochemist in 1998, a bio-organic chemist in 2003, and a second physical chemist in 2007.  The standard annual teaching load in the department is 2-1 (each course we offer has an integral lab component). Our ACS-approved program provides three degree options -- a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry, a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, and a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry -- and typically graduates about 16 majors per year.   Our department is housed in Ebaugh Laboratories (for more information about the campus layout, see campus map, where we have classroom and laboratory facilities, extensive computer resources, and a broad range of instrumentation that is used in both teaching and research: spectroscopy (400 MHz NMR, FT-IR, UV-vis, AA, microplate absorbance/fluorescence/luminescence), separations (GC/MS and other GC methods, HPLC, electrophoresis, centrifugation), electrochemistry, and imaging (multiwavelength digital imaging, STM/AFM).  Our physical resources are described in greater depth on our Instruments and Resources

Denison provides its faculty with a diverse range of professional development resources, including competitive start-up funds, a generous sabbatical leave program, a junior faculty leave following a successful third year review, and summer support for student and faculty research.  See the Provost's Office Website  for more information

Our college has cultivated an environment that fosters student-faculty collaborative research, both during the academic year and over the summer.  During the summer of 2009, 123 Denison students conducted on-campus research with faculty (64 of these were in the sciences).  Many students are supported by Denison scholarships that provide student stipends as well as money for research supplies and stipends for faculty mentors. (For more information on our student research program, see academic student research.  The Chemistry department typically has a dozen students engaged in summer research; in 2009, 17 students conducted research with six of our faculty.  Over the past decade, half of Chemistry and Biochemistry majors have engaged in research at Denison or at other schools, and 17% have either presented their results at national professional meetings or been co-authors on peer-reviewed publications.

Who we're looking for:

Successful candidates for the open position will demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate level and the capacity to develop a productive research program that involves undergraduates. A Ph.D. is required and postdoctoral experience is preferred.

Our college is committed to attracting and supporting an academically and culturally diverse faculty. We actively encourage applications from people of color, women, veterans, and people of diverse sexual identities/orientations, and we ask all applicants to include in their application materials creative ideas for how they will foster a classroom and research environment that engages students from diverse backgrounds.  (For additional information and resources on diversity at Denison, please see our Equity and Diversity Home

In this search, preference will be given to candidates whose research interests expand the range of research options available to our students, such as applications to environmental or materials science  (for more on the interests of current faculty, see the links for "About Chemistry" and "Faculty Research" on the department website).

Teaching responsibilities will include general and analytical chemistry and an advanced course in the candidate's field of expertise.

How to apply:

Applicants should submit a cover letter addressing their motivations for teaching at a small, residential, liberal arts college, curriculum vitae including a publication list, undergraduate and graduate transcripts, a statement of teaching philosophy, and a summary of research plans.  These materials and three letters of recommendation should be submitted online at https://employment.denison.edu. To assure full consideration, completed applications must be received by October 15, 2009.
