This week's blog you should be following comes to us from Peter John Ross. For all intents and purposes, Ross (as he prefers to be known) has established himself as the de facto godfather of indie filmmaking in Columbus. His full-length feature film, Horrors of War, became the subject of a recent book entitled Tales From the Front Lines of Indie Filmmaking. His blog is a great place to become familiar with the Columbus scene and to experience the day-to-day experience of a working independent filmmaker.

If you're not reading John August's blog, you're missing out on a treasure-trove of practical advice and information for screenwriters. Mr. August is the screenwriter of Go, Big Fish, and the recent Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He's a big proponent of the proverbial West Coast relocation, so if you're on the fence about whether or not you should move to LA to be a professional, this blog might just give you the nudge you've been looking for.

This week's blog you should be reading: the Grandview Theatre Blog

Columbus's historical single-screen movie theater in Grandview Heights is undergoing a change in ownership. Drexel is out, David Nedrow and Jennifer Stancel are in. Follow their blog to see how they're restoring the theater to its former glory, and maybe learn some lessons about cinema exhibition and starting a small business, too.

This Thursday, February 5, the Cinema department presents a
performance and talk by visiting artists Luis Recoder and Sandra
Gibson. Recoder + Gibson are internationally renowned film artists
whose work has appeared in two Whitney Museum biennials and numerous
art and film festivals worldwide, including, most recently, the 2009
Sundance Film Festival. Their work is part of the permanent
collections of the Whitney and the Museum of Contemporary Cinema in
Paris.

Recoder + Gibson are best known for their series of film projection
performances, a "live cinema" in which they manipulate multiple 16mm
projectors and film loops to create unusual abstract images and
striking optical illusions.

The performance will take place in the Cinema Annex at 8pm, and will
be followed by Q & A with the artists. The performance is free and
open to the Denison community.

The next day, Recoder and Gibson will visit Professor Jonathan
Walley's Cinema/Honors seminar, "Cinema Beyond Film: Expanded
Cinema" (1:30 - 2:30, also in the Cinema Annex) to discuss their work
further. They will likely show additional work that is not part of the
Thursday performance. Members of the Denison community are also
welcome to sit in on this seminar.
