Laurel Kennedy was tenured in the Communication Department in 1996 and served as department chair from 1996-2002. She has taught Research in Communication and courses that deal with the US media industry, comparative media systems, and international communication. Her recent courses focus on special topics, such as media representations of contemporary issues, and the dynamics of leadership among activists and social change advocates.  She has conducted research on the political economy of communication systems in Vietnam, the US, and Malaysia, where she was a Fulbright scholar.  Although she periodically teaches Communication courses, Dr. Kennedy currently serves outside the department as the Director of the John W. Alford Center for Service-Learning.
