Major and Minor Requirements for the B.A. Degree in Dance
The B.A in Dance from Denison offers a well-rounded approach to the study of dance as an art form. Dance majors learn to integrate the kinesthetic (body), the intellectual/critical (mind), and the emotional/internal (spirit) as they explore the physical and academic principles of dance. Dance majors study all aspects of their art form from physical movement to the aesthetics, history, science and theory of dance.
Together with the faculty, our dance students explore material academically and artistically, through both movement and theoretical inquiry. The opportunity for research and concert performance is available early in the student's career, enabling her/him to become independently productive. Our focus is on contemporary dance in African/Diasporan and Modern/Postmodern form.
Because we are a liberal arts university, we do not require an audition to enter the department nor to major/minor in dance. The dance major is required to take a minimum of 12 credits, or 6 Movement Practices (technique or performance) courses, 12 credits of Dance Studies courses or 3 courses in Somatics, Movement Analysis, Cultural Studies or Composition, and 12 credits of Advanced Studies, which includes 4 credits of electives and two courses the encompass a year-long Senior Research project.
The dance minor is required to complete 24 credits in dance including 12 credits of any level of Movement Practices courses (technique and performance) and 12 credits in Dance Studies courses. See the course catalog for more details on the major and minor requirements.
