Session Descriptions

2007 Workshop T-Shirt

Students choose a primary area of focus--poetry, fiction, or nonfiction--for the duration of the workshop. Small groups (limited to ten or fewer students) meet every day; these intensive sessions are supplemented by individual conferences with faculty members as well as structured writing time. Students also attend crosswriting sessions that offer exposure to other genres and workshops with visiting writers.

Workshops

Students advance their work on individual writing projects by presenting and critiquing successive drafts in daily sessions. Depending on their interests and preferences, students are placed in groups emphasizing poetry, fiction, or nonfiction. Workshop sessions may also include short reading assignments, writing exercises, and discussions about craft. In leading discussions, faculty help writers learn to recognize their strengths and explore approaches to revision in a supportive learning environment.

Individual Conferences

Students each meet individually with faculty members throughout the week to discuss in detail the progress of their writing and their personal writing goals and aspirations.

Crosswriting Sessions

Daily crosswriting sessions provide experience in the two genres beside that of your workshop group and make stimulating connections between each type of writing. Writing exercises and prompts help students explore elements of craft and form.

Visiting Writers

It's one thing to read the words of published authors; it’s another to hear those words directly from them and to have the opportunity to meet them. The Reynolds Workshop brings award-winning writers to conduct workshops and readings to enrich the week’s experience. Recent visitors have included acclaimed poets and writers David Baker, Jordan Davis, Holly Goddard Jones, Ann Townsend, and Charles Wyatt.

Writing Time

Quality writing time is central to the Reynolds Workshop experience. You’ll have daily opportunities to put into practice the things you learn. At least one piece of your writing will be included in the Workshop Anthology, ready to take home with you at week's end.
