D.U.R.P

A History

The Denison University Recycling Program (D.U.R.P.) was started in 1984 by a student named Richard Kobe. The program was initiated because prior to D.U.R.P.’s formation all of Denison’s waste went to a landfill, and they wanted to raise awareness about recycling and other environmental issues on Denison’s campus. D.U.R.P. began recycling at Denison by purchasing collection bins and placing them in strategic academic and residential locations around campus (Environmental Capstone class, 2000). Now, Denison’s physical plant organizes the campus recycling and has expanded bin locations and increased the number of bins available to students, faculty, staff and Granville community members.

Recycle Please!

Denison University recycles Paper, Cardboard, Glass, Aluminium, Plastic and Steel using a Wet/Dry system.

Wet includes:

  • #1 and #2 Plastics (Look for symbol on bottom of container)
  • Glass
  • Steel
  • Bi-Metal
  • Aluminium

Dry includes:

  • Newspaper
  • Officepaper (White and Colored)
  • Magazines
  • Cardboard

D.U.R.P. also collects one-sided paper and makes notebooks out of it, which are free to students. Stop by the Hibbs Library in Barney Davis to pick one up.

Old Batteries are also collected on the first floor of Barney Davis to be disposed of properly.

The Future

D.U.R.P. is still trying to expand recycling options at Denison, so any input about where recycling containers are needed is appreciated. Please contact low_j, splaws_c, or physical plant directly to voice comments or concerns.

And Remember…

Recycling should be seen as a last resort. Always try to reduce your consumption and reuse items before disposing of them.
