Letter to Class of 2011: Take the Graduation Pledge

Dear Graduating Seniors,

As commencement approaches, each of us is trying to determine our future paths and the kind of lives that we want to lead. We have lived together for the past four years in a community that has emphasized the social and environmental implications of our actions. Though we will no longer live together, we will always be part of the Denison community. As Fellows of the Environmental Studies Program, we encourage you to extend these environmental and social values that you have learned at Denison into your post-Denison lives. Graduating seniors will have the opportunity to take a pledge demonstrating our continued commitment to living environmentally and socially responsible lives. The pledge is as follows:

I pledge to explore and take into account the social and environmental consequences of any job that I consider and will try to improve these aspects of any organization for which I work.

While we hope that everyone signs the pledge, we encourage only those who are truly committed to do so. Pledge signatories will have the opportunity to display their commitment by wearing a green ribbon to graduation.

There will be several opportunities between now and graduation for you to sign. The week leading up to graduation you will be able to sign the pledge in front of the bookstore on Wednesday – Friday afternoon when you go to pick up your gowns for graduation. You will also be able to sign during the Faculty Coffee on Sunday before graduation. You can contact Jeremy King in the Office of Sustainability should you have any questions or concerns regarding the Graduation Pledge.

We look forward to you joining us in this commitment.

Sincerely,

The Environmental Studies Fellows
