Dr. Alan Shackelford teaches in the fields of the colonial Americas, American Indian history, the American West, and environmental history.  He earned his BA at Southwestern University, his MA at the University of Wyoming, and his PhD at Indiana University-Bloomington.  He is currently finishing a manuscript entitled, "On a Crossroads, American Indian History in the Confluence Region" that examines the relative roles of environment and cross-cultural interaction in the ethnogenesis of American Indian communities in the Central Mississippi Valley.  Two articles authored by him are forthcoming in The Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society and People of Persistence: Native Americans in the Midwest, a volume of collected essays edited by R. David Edmunds. Professor Shackelford comes to Denison University after teaching for three years at Hendrix College.
