Gilpatrick Center for Student Research and Fellowships

The mission of the Gilpatrick Center for Student Research and Fellowships is to support the efforts of Denison students who aspire to excellence in undergraduate and post-graduate scholarship and education. The faculty and staff of the Center commit themselves to helping motivated students imagine, design, and execute integrated plans of scholarship and related activities that will position them for academic and professional achievement, both in and beyond the undergraduate experience.
The Gilpatrick Center is the hub for programs that promote excellence in student research, cultivate the pursuit of scholarships and fellowships, and train students in the best ways to apply for and acquire those awards.
The responsibilities of the Gilpatrick Center include:
-
Advertise scholarship opportunities, run workshops for applicants, advise applicants, read drafts of the applications, coordinate the application process, and provide the institutional contact point for fellowship providers;
-
Provide support to students seeking summer research opportunities;
-
Coordinate all the summer student research programs (e.g., Young Scholars, Anderson Research Assistants, Woodyard Scholars) to ensure uniformity;
-
Take direct responsibility for the design and execution of all non-science research programs (except for the Woodyard Scholars);
-
Work with the Student Research Grants Committee, which will allocate R.C. Good student research funds to support senior research, and which will select the Young Scholars;
-
Manage the Summer Scholars Program by providing occasional lunches, study breaks, and other programs throughout the summer.
-
Arrange poster sessions and other appropriate presentation venues for the non-science Summer Scholars;
-
Administer the following programs: Great Opportunity (GO) program; R.C. Good Student Research Awards; Student Academic Travel Fund; Barbara Furin Sloat Fund;
-
Participate in the awarding of the following scholarships at Denison: A. Blair Knapp; K.I. Brown; Alumnae Endowed Scholarships; Titus Hepp Award.
Students and alumni interested in applying for major national and international scholarships and fellowships should plan on attending a general information session to learn about criteria and eligibility. These sessions, as well as writing workshops, will be advertised on this website. Appointments to further discuss potential applications can be made with Dr. Joan Krone and Dr. Jim Pletcher by contacting Cookie Sunkle at sunkle@denison.edu.
