Anderson Summer Research Assistantships & Bowen Summer Assistantships in the Sciences: Summer 2011

The Anderson Endowment Program and the Bowen Summer Scholarship Program provide Denison an opportunity to support student research in the sciences that is conducted under the guidance of a Denison science faculty member.  The experience occurs over 10-weeks during the summer when students conduct a research project under the guidance of a faculty sponsor.  Students are paid a stipend of $3,700, plus a room allowance for campus housing.  Each science student also has access to a small budget to cover supplies, software, equipment, and other items needed to perform the research.

Guidelines:
-  All science majors are eligible although preference is given to current juniors and sophomores.
-  All students present a research poster during the Summer Science Symposium held in September 2011 and submit an electronic copy of the poster to culminate the experience.
-  No academic credit is awarded for the summer research experience.
-  A current continuing member of the science faculty who will be present on campus during the summer must serve as a mentor/sponsor for the student.

How to Apply:
1.  Contact a faculty member in the sciences to discuss possible summer projects and activities.
2.  Write a proposal that describes the research project and follows the guidelines given below.
3.  Submit an electronic copy of the proposal by email to the Anderson Endowment Coordinator, Jessica Rettig [rettig@denison.edu] by Monday, January 31, 2011.
4.  Submit a hardcopy of the proposal, with the faculty mentor/sponsor’s signature, to the faculty member’s department or program chair by Monday, January 31, 2011.

1.  Title of the Project
2.  Your name, Slayter mailbox number, email address
3.  Your major gpa and cumulative gpa as reported at the end of Fall 2010
4.  Your anticipated year of graduation
5.  Your faculty mentor/sponsor’s name, department or program affiliation, and

III.  Optional -
8.  If the project has budgetary needs beyond the standard $500, please include a budget proposal and justification.

Proposal Evaluation:
Proposals are evaluated by the department/program of the student’s research sponsor.  Each department ranks the submitted proposals and reports those rankings to the Anderson Endowment Coordinator.  These rankings are used to determine which proposals are funded.  Not all students who apply will receive funding.  In 2009, 56 students applied and the Anderson and Bowen Endowments were able to fund 40 students.  In 2010, the Anderson and Bowen Endowments funded 44 students, however 72 applicants applied, a 29% increase.
