Ashbrook Scholarship Proposals
Paul R. Ashbrook Award
Paul R. Ashbrook, Denison '34, created an endowment "intended to foster and promote research and educational cooperation between faculty and students in exploring ways to improve the political and economic betterment of the unprivileged Licking County person."
The Ashbrook Scholarship is a summer scholar opportunity open to any student who has engaged in community service (broadly defined, such service includes DCA involvement, work in America Reads, and Service-Learning coursework). Students who apply are encouraged to explore further the issues brought out by their previous community service experience. The scholar will be advised by a faculty member and will carry out research and engage in service with an organization that provides some kind of assistance to the community. The summer scholarship and service will culminate in a written or artistic project; a poster session presentation along with other summer scholars is required.
Proposals should be submitted to the Director of the John W. Alford Center for Service-Learning, and should include:
A reflective description of the applicant's community service background;
A description of the service-learning project to be undertaken, including a list of learning objectives;
A discussion of the major issues to be explored in the applicant’s research;
A placement plan and schedule for community service and meetings with the faculty advisor;
A list of bibliographic resources; and
A letter from the faculty supervisor endorsing the project and placement plan.
The following criteria will be used in selecting the 2013 Ashbrook Scholar(s):
The extent to which the proposed project appears feasible during the 10 week summer internship period;
The intellectual sophistication of the project’s learning objectives;
The scope of the bibliographic resources (these should include discipline-specific materials and materials that address service-learning as a pedagogy);
The strength of support indicated in the faculty letter.
Application deadline is January 28, 2013 by 4:30 p.m. Higley 021
