Paul R. Ashbrook Award

Paul R. Ashbrook, Denison '34, is the donor of an endowment "intended to foster and promote research and educational cooperation between faculty and students in exploring ways to improve the political and economic betterment of the unprivileged Licking County person."

The scholarship is open to any student who has engaged in community service (broadly defined, including DCA involvement, service-learning coursework, etc.) Students are encouraged to plan to explore further the issues brought out by their previous community service experience. The scholar will be advised by a faculty member and will keep a journal and do extensive background reading. At the end of the internship, a writing or artistic project and a presentation to other summer scholars is required.

Proposals should be submitted to Lyn Robertson, Director of the John W. Alford Center for Service-Learning and should include:

1. A history and description of the applicant's community service background, service-learning project to be undertaken, and the major issues to be explored;
2. A placement plan and schedule for community service and meetings with faculty advisor;
3. A bibliography and bibliographical resources;
4. A letter from the faculty supervisor endorsing the project and placement plan.

The following criteria will be used in selecting the 2011 Ashbrook Scholar:

1. The extent to which the proposed project is or might be feasible during the 10 week internship period;
2. The intellectual sophistication of the project as conceived and in terms of its learning objectives;
3. The thoroughness of bibliography, especially discipline-specific materials, (not necessarily requiring materials on service-learning as pedagogy);
4. The strength of support indicated in the faculty letter.
