Amgen Scholars Program

The Amgen Scholars Program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to engage in hands-on summer research at ten of the leading US research institutions – Cal Tech, Columbia/Barnard, Howard, MIT, Stanford, UC-Berkeley, UCLA, UC-San Diego, UC-San Francisco, and the University of Washington. Research opportunities are available in the following fields:  biochemistry, bioengineering, bioinformatics, biopsychology, biotechnology, chemical and biomolecular engineering, chemistry, immunology, medical pharmacology, microbiology, molecular genetics, molecular medicine, molecular pharmacology, molecular/cell/developmental biology, neurobiology, neuroscience, pathology, physiological psychology, physiological science, statistics, and toxicology. 

Students must be US citizens or permanent residents, have completed the sophomore or junior year (or be non-graduating seniors), and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2, with an interest in pursuing a PhD or MD-PhD program.

Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program

The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation is accepting applications for the Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program, one that awards $7,500 to U.S. citizens who will be seniors or are recent graduates of an accredited U.S. college or university in the fall of 2011. The Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program takes college seniors and recent graduates to Washington, DC. There, they will be placed in congressional offices and learn about health policy issues, mainly the ones that affect racial and ethnic minority and underserved communities. The $7,500 that the award winner receives includes $2,000 stipend upon successful completion of the program, expenses, and transportation.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers a competition for awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.

Clinton Global Initiatives University

Building on the successful model of the Clinton Global Initiative, which brings together world leaders to take action on global challenges, President Clinton launched the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) in 2007 to engage the next generation of leaders on college campuses around the world.

Each year, CGI U hosts a meeting for students, national youth organizations, and university officials to discuss solutions to pressing global issues. The second CGI U Meeting was held at The University of Texas at Austin from February 13-15, 2009. Nearly one thousand students came together to make a difference in CGI U’s five focus areas: Education, Energy & Climate Change, Global Health, Peace & Human Rights, and Poverty Alleviation.

All students who wish to attend the CGI U Meeting must submit an application. Each application is thoroughly reviewed by the CGI U team. CGI U actively seeks a range of students who have a variety of experiences, interests, talents, and goals.

Critical Language Scholarships

The Department of State Critical Language Scholarships will provide funding for U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master’s and Ph.D. students to participate in beginning, intermediate and/or advanced level summer language programs in Arabic, Bangla/Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and Urdu at American Overseas Research Centers and affiliated partners in Summer 2008.

Recipients of these scholarships will be expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period and later apply their critical language skills in their professional careers.

All applicants must be U.S. citizens. Applicants must be either currently enrolled in a degree-granting program at the undergraduate* or graduate level or have graduated from an undergraduate or graduate program no more than 2 years ago (May 2006). Students in all disciplines including business, engineering, science, the social sciences and humanities are encouraged to apply. Current undergraduate students must have completed at least one year of general college course-work by program start date (one year is defined as two semesters or three quarters). The U.S. Department of State and CAORC welcome all eligible applications and do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, age, or handicap condition.

Programs range from 7 weeks to 11 weeks, beginning in early to mid-June with a pre-departure orientation in Washington, DC. Students must attend the full program and participate in all program activities.

All program costs are covered for participants. This includes travel between the student’s home city and program location, pre-departure orientation costs, applicable visa fees, room, board, travel within country and all entrance fees for program activities. Note: U.S. passport fees will not be paid by the scholarship.

DAAD/RISE - Research Internships in Science and Engineering in Germany

RISE gives students in the fields of biology, chemistry, earth sciences, engineering and physics the chance to spend a summer working with German doctoral students on serious research projects. The doctoral students help integrate the undergraduate directly into the lab work and serve as personal and professional mentors. All participants receive stipends from DAAD to help cover living expenses, and the partner universities and research institutions provide housing assistance.

* The RISE internship database contains 484 research internships, including 169 Engineering Projects, 118 Chemistry projects, 98 Biology projects, 78 Physics projects, and 21 Earth Science projects.

* They are offering a new monthly stipend rate of 650 Euros/month. 

* Although the scholarship will not cover international travel costs, interns will receive a 5-day German rail pass. Two days of the rail pass will be used to attend 3-day meeting of all interns in Heidelberg, and the remaining three days can be used for personal travel.

* Starting this year, selected RISE and RISE pro interns with no or little German proficiency have the opportunity to participate in a two week intensive language course in Germany's capital Berlin. The course takes place before the internship starts and helps students to benefit even more of their stay in Germany. Courses will be offered on May, 5th, on May, 19th, and on June, 2nd. The DAAD will also cover the course fee. Reasonably priced accommodation will be available. RISE participants interested in attending the language course should mention this on an additional application form.

*  RISE will be offering 30 scholarships for students with no previous
German language background to attend a 2-week intensive language course prior to the start of the program.

DAAD Study & Internship Program (SIP)

The program consists of:

* A full academic semester of study abroad at one of the UAS7 universities in Germany

* A one-semester professional internship experience in a company or research institute in Germany.

All applicants selected for the program will receive a monthly scholarship for the duration of the study semester, and a stipend for the duration of the internship semester.

To be considered for the SIP program, students have to be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at an accredited US or Canadian college or university. Applications are invited from Sophomores or Juniors in one of these fields: engineering, science, life sciences; business, management, economics; architecture, art, design; journalism, social work.

DHS HS-STEM Summer Internship Program

The DHS HS-STEM Summer Internship Program provides a 10-week summer research experience for undergraduate students majoring in homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM) disciplines. Students will have the opportunity to conduct research in DHS mission-relevant areas at various federal research facilities. Participants receive a stipend of $500 each week plus transportation expenses to/from their internship location.

Environmental Law Institute Research Intern

The Environmental Law Institute (ELI), a non-profit research and education center in Washington, DC, seeks individuals to conduct research on natural resource protection and pollution prevention. Interns work directly with staff attorneys, scientists and economists on a variety of projects. Substantive areas of focus include: land use policy, public participation in environmental regulation, biodiversity, air quality, public health, hazardous waste and brownfields, wetlands and watershed policy, international environmental policy, environmental management systems, and environmental enforcement. Interns conduct library and internet research, attend and report on outside events, review and summarize scholarly material, assist with preparation for environmental training courses, conduct telephone interviews, and perform various administrative tasks. Positions are available throughout the academic year (minimum 15 hours/week) and during the summer (full-time). Candidates should possess superior research, writing and interpersonal communication skills, as well as a strong desire to gain knowledge of the environmental field. A strong academic background is required, but specific environmental experience is not mandatory. Applicants must have completed freshman year of college. GRO Undergraduate Fellowships

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is offering Greater Research Opportunities Undergraduate Fellowships for bachelor level students in environmentally related fields of study for FY2013. http://epa.gov/ncer/fellow/

Eligible students will receive support for their junior and senior years of undergraduate study and for an internship at an EPA facility during the summer between their junior and senior years. The fellowship provides up to $19,700 per year of academic support and up to $9,500 of internship support for the three-month summer period.

Harry S. Truman Scholarship

The Truman Scholarship is designed for oustanding students who have shown not only great intellectual promise, but a commitment to public service and strong leadership skills. It funds the senior year of college and two years of graduate study, up to $30,000 spread over those three years. DeKarman fellowships are open to students in any discipline, including international students, who are currently enrolled in a university or college located within the United States. *Only candidates for the PhD who will defend their dissertations by June 2012 and undergraduates entering their senior year (will receive bachelors degree in June 2012) are eligible for consideration. Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program 

The Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program (NREIP), provides an opportunity for students to participate in research at a Department of Navy (DoN) laboratory for ten weeks during the summer. A stipend of $5250 for sophomores and $7880 for juniors and seniors will be awarded.

The goals of the NREIP are to encourage participating students to pursue science and engineering careers, to further education via mentoring by laboratory personnel and their participation in research, and to make them aware of DoN research and technology efforts, which can lead to employment within the DoN.

NREIP provides competitive research internships to approximately 230 college students (175 undergraduate students and 55 graduate students) each year. Participating students typically spend ten weeks during the summer doing research at approximately 12 DoN laboratories. To participate, a student must be enrolled at an eligible college/university (comprising approximately 160 institutions; eligibility is determined by the Office of Naval Research) and have completed at least their sophomore year before beginning the internship.

NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program

The National Institute of Health (NIH) offers an innovative ten week program to support the career development of the next generation of biomedical health researchers. The service-connected scholarship program, the Undergraduate Scholarship Program for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds (UGSP), targets students who are committed to pursuing careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related fields. The program offers up to $20,000 annually in scholarship support, paid research training at the NIH during the summer and after graduation, and intensive mentoring, research experience, career guidance, and skill development

Nuclear Regulatory Commission Grants

The nuclear education opportunity for grants is currently available on Grants.gov, the central storehouse for information on federally funded grant programs. NRC's Nuclear Education Grants provide funding for undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships, trade school scholarships, and faculty development grants. The exact amount of funds that NRC may recommend for grants is determined in pre-award negotiations between the applicant and the agency. NRC only awards grants directly to accredited U.S. institutions of higher education and does not award individual scholarships or fellowships.

Pickering Undergraduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship

The Pickering Undergraduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship seeks to recruit talented students in academic programs relevant to international affairs, political and economic analysis, administration, management, and science policy. Women, members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, and students with financial need are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility requirements: U S citizens in the junior year of undergraduate study with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale (this must be maintained throughout participation in the program).

Consideration will be given to qualified applicants who demonstrate outstanding leadership skills and academic achievement in programs relevant to the work of the U.S. Department of State, such as international affairs, management, communications, history, political science, economics, and foreign languages, and also to whether a candidate demonstrates financial need. The number of fellowships will be determined by available funding.

In the 2012 Fellowships, financial support of up to $40,000 annually towards tuition and mandatory fees (excluding health insurance), living stipend (based on the institution’s room and board rate), reimbursement for books and some travel may be paid during the senior year and during the first year of graduate study pending availability of funding. Participating schools provide financial support in the second year of graduate study based on need. Fellows must participate in one overseas and one domestic summer internship within the U.S. Department of State. Students receive a stipend during the internships.

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)

The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program. This solicitation features two mechanisms for support of student research: (1) REU Sites are based on independent proposals to initiate and conduct projects that engage a number of students in research. REU Sites may be based in a single discipline or academic department, or on interdisciplinary or multi-department research opportunities with a coherent intellectual theme. Proposals with an international dimension are welcome. A partnership with the Department of Defense supports REU Sites in DoD-relevant research areas. (2) REU Supplements may be requested for ongoing NSF-funded research projects or may be included as a component of proposals for new or renewal NSF grants or cooperative agreements.

Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation Defense Scholarship Program

Science, mathematics, and engineering (SME), are vital disciplines to our national defense. To increase the supply of scientists, mathematicians, and engineers, the Department of Defense (DoD) established the Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Education Program. The purpose is to promote the education, recruitment and retention of outstanding undergraduate and graduate students in SME studies. The DoD will offer these scholarships and fellowships to individuals who have demonstrated ability and special aptitude for training and education in SME. The DoD is also interested in supporting the education of future scientists and engineers in a number of interdisciplinary areas. It will allow individuals to acquire an education in exchange for a period of employment with the Department of Defense in the areas specified.

The prevailing goal of the SMART program is to provide the United States with talented, trained American men and women who will lead state of the art research projects in disciplines having the greatest payoff to national defense requirements. The Phillips Foundation Ronald Reagan Future Leaders Scholarship Program

The Ronald Reagan College Leaders Scholarship Program seeks to recognize outstanding young people who are promoting American values on college campuses. The scholarships are designed to alleviate the financial burdens associated with higher education, permitting the winners to devote more time both to pursuing their academic goals and advancing their leadership initiatives. Applicants may apply for the Ronald Reagan College Leaders Scholarship Program during their sophomore year. Winners will receive the scholarship for their junior year and may apply for renewal before their senior year. ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship

ThinkSwiss offers scholarships for a research stay in Switzerland. It supports highly motivated and qualified U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to do research at a public Swiss university or research institute for 2 to 3 months. The scholarship is open to students of all fields.

Requirements
To apply for a ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship, you must:

• Be currently enrolled at an accredited U.S. university/college
• Be a graduate student or an undergraduate student who will have completed your sophomore year by the time the research stay in Switzerland begins
• Provide a written confirmation from a professor at a Swiss university that he/she will accept you for a research stay in his/her group

Scholarship
The ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship program provides a monthly scholarship of CHF 1,050 (approx. USD 1,000) for a period of 2 to 3 months (CHF 3,150 maximum), which covers two thirds of the average student’s living costs. By accepting this scholarship, you agree to participate in a blog to share your experiences during your research stay in Switzerland. After your return to the U.S. you also agree to carry out at least one activity as student “ambassador” to promote Swiss research. Half of the scholarship will be paid at the beginning and half at the end of your research stay, after your final report has been received.

This program does not provide health, accident or liability insurance. Applicants must make sure that they have insurance coverage applicable for their stay in Switzerland.

While German, French or Italian language skills are not required for the research stay in Switzerland, knowledge of any of these languages would be helpful in daily life. The working language will generally be English.
