Math student Patricia Garmirian ('05) fielded a surprise question after presenting her summer research with Professor Matt Neal at the AMS Contributed Paper Session on Analysis at the Joint AMS/MAA Mathematical Meetings in Atlanta, GA on January 6. After presenting her talk, "Encoding Algebra as Affine Geometry," a lady introduced herself from a university in Texas and asked Patti if she was on the job market as her university was hiring a functional analyst! Although Patti was flattered, she decided to turn down the prospective position in favor of first attending graduate school. To keep her future options open, Patti did provide the lady with a preprint of her results!.
