Shortcuts for creating tonal character symbols on a Mac
First change your keyboard input language to Unicode Hex Input (the red flag with a U+ on it).
Next hold down the option key and type the string of characters indicated below for each symbol.
ä = 0101
ǎ = 0103ë = 0113
