Denison University Intensive Summer Program

Culture, Gender and Society in Chile and Latin America:

I. Program Description

Social, Cultural and Political Issues in Contemporary Chile and Andean Region Project is sponsored by the Gender and Social Studies Program (Progenero), which will act as host for international students. The Program, which started in 1996, is part of Universidad de Humanismo Cristiano (UAHC), one of the most prestigious centers for higher learning in the nation.

The UAHC has a faculty body of around 85 full-time professors, and more than 3,500 undergraduate students. The University has a main library which is computer networked with Alexandria. UAHC is committed to critical thinking and social compromise and emphasizes human rights, gender, multiculturalism, poverty and other current social and political issues in Chile and Latin America.

Progenero offers undergraduate courses dealing with the representation and relevance of gender perspectives within the multicultural political context of Latin America. The Program represents a new territory where scholarly rigor meets the challenges of new civil sensibilities expressed through formal and alternative avenues of knowledge. Progenero fosters and maintains collaborative work with a wide variety of community and non-governmental organizations.

The Culture, Gender and Society Program offers for international students intensive language and culture courses with a special focus on gender relations, social and cultural movements and new political groups in contemporary Chile.

Our program can accomodate students who have completed a third semester of Spanish at the college level. Lower level students will have bilingual professors so that more complex concepts can be explained in English. Initially these students will have readings in English so that all students can form a common conceptual foundation.
