Athletic Training Major

The Athletic Training major contains two separate routes.

During the spring semester of the 2002 - 2003 academic year the Denison University faculty approved the Athletic Training curriculum as an academic major.

Through the athletic training curriculum students are challenged in the traditional classroom and expected to demonstrate their knowledge within practicum experiences. This combination of experiences afford the student ample opportunity to use their intellectual and physical abilities in a problem solving environment in which real patients benefit.

Students are strongly encouraged to explore the athletic training major early by reviewing the requirements of the major with their academic advisor. Students are also encouraged to discuss the requirements with the Physical Education Chairperson prior to declaring athletic training as their major.

Curriculum

This option is for students that do not wish to pursue a career in athletic training. Students that choose to participate in this option are generally interested in pursuing graduate study in another health related field or a career within the athletic / fitness industry. Students do not apply for admission into the major and are not eligible to become athletic trainers upon graduating from Denison.

Curriculum-plus / (ATEP)

This option includes the athletic training major and structured clinical education series. The curriculum-plus route is identified as the Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP). Formal admission into the ATEP is required. The ATEP is for students interested in pursuing a career in athletic training. Only athletic training majors that are formally admitted into the ATEP and successfully complete all ATEP graduation requirements are eligible to take the BOC examination upon graduation.

For the student who has a desire to pursue athletic training as a career, we ask that you read about ATEP.
