Cephus Stephens Lecture

Cephus L/ Stephens, in whose memory this lecture series if offered, joined the Denison faculty in 1949 as the first head of the newly established Department of Government. He received the Ph.D, M.A., and B.S. from the Ohio State University, and taught at Harvard and the University of Rochester before assuming his position at Denison.  He chaired the Department of Government, eventually renamed Political Science, for the next thirteen years and, again, in 1971-72. Professor Stephens taught primarily in the areas of political Philosophy and institutions of American government, and his courses in the history of political thought and government regulation became Denison institutions. Several thousand Denisonians, many whom have gone on to successful careers in law, education, public service, and business, encountered this dedicated teacher in the course of their undergraduate experience. Many Denison faculty fondly recall their association with Professor Stephens as a colleague. Ceph retired with emeritus status in 1972. He died in 1976.
