Hearty congratulations to this year’s Moot Court team for its most successful regional competition yet, held November 19-20, 2010 in Wooster, Ohio. After six years of building the Moot Court team, Denison won the Midwest Regional tournament. This year Denison was represented by twelve teams of two students: Christina Bazak ’12 and Steven Profitt ’12, Atanu Chakravarty ’13 and Mitchell Rogers ’14, Claire Douglas ’12 and Becca Barhorst ’13, Rachel Atkins ’13 and Andrew Gordon ’12, Tenniecia Williams ’12 and Peter Hurford ’14, Chelsea Glassmann ’12 and Haley Hudler ’13, Katy McCann ’13 and Rob Moore ’12, Lee Matheson ’13 and Mark Stanton ’12, Vanessa Butler ’11 and David Kreuzman ’13, John Bute ’14 and Ryann Thomas ’14, Patrick Kolehouse ’13 and Mallory Hinz ’14.
Seven schools and thirty-six teams competed at the tournament including Aquinas College, Saginaw Valley State University, Youngstown State University, Ohio Wesleyan University, the University of the Incarnate Word, and perennial national powerhouse, the College of Wooster.
After the first day of competition, five Denison teams broke into the final Round of 16 and competed in the head-to-head, single elimination debates on Saturday. Teams (1) Christina Bazak and Steven Profitt, (2) Lee Matheson and Mark Stanton, (3) Chelsea Glassmann and Haley Hudler, (4) Mallory Hinz and Patrick Kolehouse, and (5) Peter Hurford and Tenniecia Williams, all made it into the Round of 16.
The Denison team of Bazak /Profitt won in four single elimination final rounds. They were the #1 seed representing the Midwest Region at the National Tournament. Two other teams also received at-large bids to the tournament. Denison had 7 of the top 25 individual orators (including 3 of the top 5). Awards went to Mallory Hinz (#2), Lee Matheson, (#4), Steven Profitt (#5). In addition, Christina Bazak ranked #12, Patrick Kolehouse (#14), Haley Hudler (#18) and Chelsea Glassmann (#22) all ranked within the top 25 out of 72 competitors.
After competition finished at the other regional tournaments in December, another two at-large bids to the National Tournament (based on team scores and the “strength of schedule” of the Midwest region) were awarded to the teams of Matheson/Stanton, and Glassmann/Hudler. The three Denison teams competed at the National Tournament, the second week of January at Tulane University Law School in New Orleans, LA. At the National Tournament the team of Bazak /Profitt broke into the second round of the final day, putting them in the top 64 teams in the nation.
In coordination with his Constitutional Law class, Dr Boehme has served as Advisor and Coach for the Denison Moot Court teams since inception in 2005; Student Advisors this year were Christina Bazak and Steven Profitt.
