Open Faculty Position
The Department of Political Science at Denison University, a highly selective liberal arts college, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment beginning Fall 2011 at the rank of assistant professor. We will consider applicants who specialize in Comparative Politics, American Politics, or Race/Ethnic Politics and who do not duplicate existing departmental specialties. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to teach at least one course per year in normative political theory and be able to offer additional theory courses when our theorist is on leave.
Preference will be given to applicants who provide evidence of teaching effectiveness and show promise of a strong record of publication. Broad training in political science is expected. The successful candidate is expected to have significant interest in undergraduate teaching and provide evidence of superior teaching skills. The prospective teacher-scholar also will support the University's commitment to liberal arts education, be an active participant in departmental and university governance, and develop a program of research leading to peer-reviewed publication.
Denison offers a 3-2 teaching load. After a successful Third Year Review, a one-semester sabbatical is available in the fourth year.
Ph.D. must be completed by September 1, 2011. Teaching experience strongly preferred.
Representatives of the department will conduct interviews of potential candidates at the 2010 APSA meeting in Washington, DC. If you would like to be considered for an APSA interview, please contact the chair by email and attach a c.v.
To assure full consideration, completed applications must be received by September 30, 2010. We will begin reviewing files on October 1 but applications will be reviewed until the position is filled.
Applications must be submitted online at: https://employment.denison.edu and should include a cover letter stating your qualifications and interests in teaching at a liberal arts college, C.V., syllabi, an article-length writing sample, and 3 letters of recommendation from faculty familiar with your teaching and research capabilities. We also want to see a transcript (an unofficial transcript is acceptable, though if hired, an official transcript will be required). A teaching philosophy is required and course evaluations, if available, are strongly encouraged.
