Political Science Summer Scholar

Summer Scholars

If at all possible, you should consider doing an internship during the summer to help you figure out what kinds of jobs you want or don’t want to do when you graduate. If you plan to go on to a graduate school experience, you can still do internships. If an academic program, do research for a non-profit, work in government, or do summer research (see below). If law school, try to find something law related: clerking for a lawyer or court, paralegal type work, etc.  Career Services can help you find internships (remember they have money you can apply for if the internship is unpaid) or you can search on your own. There are a lot of internship opportunities out there!

Summer research is a great option too.  Summer research applications are due in early February!  So get started this fall.  In recent years, these have become quite competitive so you need to do a lot of research and revision in concert with your advisor to have a good chance at acceptance. We advise you to start by early November to have the best chance at earning one of the summer scholar spots. Summer research comes with a stipend and housing.  Staying on campus to do research is a rich educational experience. You can do it one-on-one with a faculty advisor or as a research ‘cell’ – a group working on related topics with one or more faculty advisors.
