Cephus L. Stephens Summer Internship in Public Affairs

The internship, named in honor of Denison professor Cephus L. Stephens, gives students with a genuine interest in public affairs the chance to become intimately familiar with the workings of government by serving in a governmental office or private sector organization involved in public policy.  Many Denison students have taken advantage of this extraordinary opportunity since the program was founded in 1984.  Over the years interns have taken positions in a variety of offices, including the White House Office of Private Sector Initiatives, the D.C. public defender’s office, a campaign consulting firm, and the World Bank.  Though most past recipients have taken internships in Washington, D.C., fulfilling the internship in other locations is not precluded.

This internship carries a stipend of $3300 to defray living expenses for its duration, which usually runs 10 to 12 weeks.  To qualify students must currently be sophomores or juniors with a GPA of 3.0 or better.  Applicants need not be political science majors.  Selection of the intern is competitive and based on the overall quality of the application and academic achievement.  Preference is given to current juniors.

To apply:  Submit a letter of application, a current resume, and have a copy of your transcript sent to Dr. Jim Pletcher, Chair, Department of Political Science.  Please address your letter to Mr. Joseph E. McMahon, 2031 Q Street NW Apt 2, Washington DC 20009-1009, but give it to Dr. Pletcher. The letter should describe your background and your policy interests.  It should also explain how this internship will fit into your overall educational program and goals.  While you are not expected to arrange an internship yourself, giving an indication of the kind of internship you think would best fulfill your goals is important.  The selection of the Stephens intern is determined by the Political Science Department.  Applications are due Monday, 2 March 2009.  If you have any questions please contact Jim Pletcher, Department of Political Science Knapp 305-C  x6501  Email: pletcher@denison.edu
