Biography
Dr. Hassebrock came to Denison in 1983 and teaches courses in Cognitive Psychology, Research in Cognitive Psychology, Psychology of Adult Development and Aging, Research in Adult Development and Aging, Research Methods in Psychology, and Introduction to Psychology and seminars on “The Seven Sins of Memory: The Psychology of Remembering and Forgetting,” “Autobiographical Memory and the Remembering Self,” and “Remembering in Natural Contexts: Memory, Culture, and Self.” His recent research projects have explored the cognitive psychology of autobiographical memory including age and gender differences in remembering meaningful personal experiences and significant life events. Previously, Dr. Hassebrock’s research focused on the psychology of expertise; in particular, the memory and problem-solving skills used by physicians in diagnostic reasoning.
Research
My research interests in cognitive psychology include attention, memory, problem solving, and decision making. Over the past several years my research has examined (a) the temporal and narrative organization of autobiographical memories, (b) the role of perceptual cues such as sounds and pictures in the retrieval of autobiographical memories, and (c) the impact of highly emotional stimuli in remembering personal experiences. For example, I have compared memories of young and middle-aged men and women who recalled personal experiences in important life domains such as education, family, work, and friendships. In another study, a large sample of men and women between 30 and 85 years of age recalled autobiographical memories associated with keepsake objects (i.e., souvenirs or mementos). These data are being examined to determine if the recalled experiences fit a "reminiscence bump" for particular decades of the participants' lives. I have also examined the autobiographical memories recalled by pediatric cardiologists who were asked to remember previous patients in their professional practice. Their memories of patients and the patients’ families were quite vivid and rich in contextual and emotional content, and contained many items of specific temporal and event information. In addition, the memories were often presented in a narrative organization where multiple events and encounters were recalled for each patient, sometimes from periods of time that covered 10 to 20 years. Most recently, I have worked with several Denison students on a series of experiments where we systematically varied the emotional content of different types of perceptual cues in order to study the retrieval processes used to recall autobiographical memories and their distinctive phenomenological characteristics.
I am very interested in working with Denison students as research collaborators on these types of experiments in autobiographical memory and cognitive psychology. I also would be quite willing to work with students on research projects in adult development on topics including aging and memory, Alzheimer’s disease, caregiving, stress and coping, and inter-generational family relationships.
