Professor of Sociology/Anthropology Mary Tuominen joined the faculty in 1993. She received her B.A. in Education followed by her Master's in Public Administration (public policy) from Seattle University. She received her Ph.D. in 1994 from the University of Oregon. Her teaching and research interests are in the areas of gender and race ethnicity, political economy, work/family, social change, and public policy.

"The transformation of women's care work is the foundational issue of my research agenda. The transformation of care work, specifically child care, provides a broad base from which to explore my interests in feminist and political economic theory, and gender and race ethnicity, as well as processes of socio-cultural change. In journal articles, as well as my book (We Are Not Babysitters, Rutgers University Press), I explore the concerns voiced by child care workers about their low wages, lack of benefits and the lack of equal and economic value accorded their work. My most current research includes an analysis of self-advocacy and political mobilization among child care workers. It is my goal, through my research and writing, to increase the public visibility of child care providers.My hope is to thereby inform policy debates that have been woefully lacking in recognition of the social and economic value of child care work and the women who perform this work.
