Dr. Marlene Tromp, Chair of Women's Studies, Professor of English and Women's Studies, came to Denison in 1997. She studies Victorian literature, gender, critical theory, and pop culture. She teaches courses in these areas and in service learning. Her book Altered States: Sex, Nation, Drugs, and Self in Victorian Spiritualism was published with SUNY press in 2006. She has recently completed a collection of essays called Victorian 'Freaks': The Social Context of Freakery in the Nineteenth Century. She is also the author of The Private Rod: Sexual Violence, Marriage, and the Law in Victorian England (U Press of Virginia 2000), and she co-edited and contributed to another collection, Mary Elizabeth Braddon: Beyond Sensation (SUNY 2000).
