Paving the Way Pre-Orientation FAQ

Will I be able to move into my assigned residence hall when I come for the pre-orientation program?

Yes. Once you start pre-orientation, for all intentions and purposes, you have officially begun your undergraduate college experience.

Will my parent(s) be able to stay in the room with me?

In the past, some parents have spent time in their student's room. If, however, your roommate has arrived, parents are encouraged to seek lodging elsewhere. Parents can book rooms at local hotels, bed and breakfasts, or inns. Information on these are located in your First-Year notebook.

Can I be involved in sports practices during the pre-orientation experiences?

Yes, but talk with your coach to make sure that you have release time to also be involved in the sessions. If you find that you cannot reasonably do both, you will need to make a conscious decision which experience would prove most valuable. It has been proven that students who take the time out at the beginning of their experience to be involved in pre-orientation, have a better handle on how to manage their first semester.

What do I do if I arrive for pre-orientation after work hours?

Normal hours are 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Should you need to arrive later than this, I will need to know well in advance so that I can make the necessary arrangements for you to get into your room. Please note that room keys will not be distributed by security; these can only be secured from the Curtis West Service Center, which closes at 4:30.

What happens if I do not submit a pre-orientation registration form and just show up?

You run the risk of not having a room ready for you to move into. You also affect the meal count and other activities that are scheduled for students. Note: Prior proper planning is extremely important, so make sure you register early.

What other forms are necessary?

It is imperative that you submit your health forms. If this form is not in the Health and Records office, then you will not be able to begin your undergraduate experience. Other forms that must be submitted are: housing, personal data/advising form, etc. Refer to the New Student Forms and Information Notebook.

Are there sessions for parents?

Yes, there is a parents-only session which will take place on the 22nd. Parents are also invited to sit in on any of the other sessions with you. This, too, has been helpful to parents.

Do I have to pay for anything associated with pre-orientation?

All costs associated with meals, co-curricular activities are taken care of. If, however, you wish to purchase something outside this realm, it is at your personal expense.

What is the average cost of books for the classes I will be taking?

The average cost of books per semester is $300-$400. If you receive a book grant, it will be for $300. You will need to make up the difference, so make sure you save enough money over the course of the summer.

Can I set up a savings/checking account?

Yes, many of the students bank with the Park National Bank located in the village of Granville. There is also a PNB machine in Slayter. Be well advised to open an account early so that your money will be secured.

Should I desire to, will there be places for me to worship?

There are several local churches both in Granville and in Newark. Additionally, students commute to Columbus to any number of churches there. Your spiritual development is important so be encouraged to seek out a church home for the time that you are in school.

What is the level of expectation for my participation in all activities associated with the pre-orientation experience?

You are expected to be actively involved. If your intent is to simply show up and view the experience in a casual , nonchalant fashion, then this will be at the displeasure of all of us who have taken extreme care to develop a meaningful experience for you. Additionally, we will have to address this matter with you, which is not the most appropriate way to begin this new and exciting journey.
