Design Proposals for Knapp Amphitheatre
Funds have been set aside to renovate the Knapp Amphitheatre. The
renovation is likely to take place this upcoming summer (2003). We want
your input before we plan this renovation. On Monday, January 27, the
Learning Spaces Project Committee convened a meeting for Knapp faculty
members to give us their ideas about what we might do to improve this
space. Some interesting ideas came out of that meeting; they are
presented in six informal drawings below.
Please take a look at these drawings and send your feedback to learningspaces@denison.edu.
Regardless of the configuration of choice, we expect to install new
technology (networked computer, ceiling-mounted projector, screen,
VCR/DVD and a sound system), as well as new lighting, paint and
possibly furniture and carpet.
Thank you for taking the time to give us your thoughtful comments.
Knapp Amphitheatre as it is today. The windows are at the rear (top) of this drawing. There are three rows of fixed seats, two rows of which are installed on tiers above ground level. Total seating is 89.
|
Plan A. A curtain bisects the room so that the case study seating (horseshoe shape) can accommodate approximately 50 with an additional 30-40 seated at tables behind the curtain. This configuration provides for a large seating capacity (nearly what it is today) while making it possible to conduct smaller classes and separate breakout sessions with the curtain drawn.
|
Plan B. This configuration creates two separate, long and narrow classrooms. The instructor would have approximately 8' between the wall and the first row of seats. Total seating in each classroom would be 18-20.
|
Plan C. This plan creates two separate classrooms with small breakout spaces in the rear of each classroom. Curtains or movable "soft walls" would separate the breakout spaces from the classrooms. Total seating in each classroom qould be 18-20, not including the seating in the breakout spaces.
|
Plan D. This plan is similar to Plan C however there are walls separating the breakout spaces instead of a curtain or "soft walls."
|
Plan E. This plan creates a case study (horseshoe shape) classroom in the front with approximately 30-35 seats as well as two small seminar or breakout rooms in the rear. Hallways surround the central classroom to allow access to the seminar rooms.
