Learning Spaces

Meeting of October 3, 2001

Scott Siddall updated the committee on current projects including the two model classrooms in Knapp 308 and Fellows 305, the renovation of Fellows 321/322 into a single, more useful classroom, and the hallway lighting projects in Knapp and Fellows. The renovation of the Burke recital hall was also discussed.

A budget allocation for 2001-2002 was made for the Learning Spaces Project so our work can continue.

Reports on learning spaces in various buildings were solicited last Spring. Two were presented to the committee today as follows:

A revised plan was confirmed to invite a classroom architect/consultant to spend a day on campus, touring the facilities, meeting with faculty and students in an open forum, during a Common Hour. Siddall will make the arrangements.

Funding of projects for 2001-2002 was discussed. The fine arts area has many spaces that could be improved for learning, but the Project's total budget could be consumed by a single classroom renovation. The committee recommended that we fund several smaller projects rather than a single project with this year's funding.

The members also noted that the Learning Spaces Project committee is most effective as a coordinating body when it is connected to University Council, Student Affairs, DCGA, and others. We concluded that we needed a larger committee, with more faculty representation, possibly with a subcommittee structure for each task area. The members concluded that the committee should be institutionalized in a more formal manner (e.g., made a regular committee within the governance structure).
