Nicaragua

This photo was taken while hiking a mountain at Volcan Masaya in Nicaragua. We were able to see all around us for miles and miles, and then were able to see the lava from the volcano when the sun went down.

Samumur, France

It was an amazing opportunity to be able to see the sun rise over Saumur, France on my winter break. In the early morning it is easy to see the village as it was in the Middle Ages, small houses sitting on the side of the important Loire River as the castle sits atop of the sloping hill.

"The Peace Wall" - Belfast, Ireland

"The Troubles" have calmed down within the last decade but there is still an atmosphere of separation during distinct neighborhoods. My program took a Black Cab tour to visit these areas of Belfast. In Belfast, between the Catholic and Protestant neighborhoods barriers were constructed during the 1970s and even into the early 1990s to minimize the sectarian violence. This section of the peace wall separates the Catholic nationalists in the Falls Road neighborhood from the Protestant unionists in the Shankill Road neighborhood in West Belfast. The gates within the wall, still to this day, are closed at 6 pm and the wall was just added to it making the total height approximately 25 feet. It was extremely interesting to look at the murals that line both sides of the Peace Wall and to read the names of those who have visited.

Greece

The Greek Island Santorini lies smack dab in the middle of the Aegean Sea. It was formed by one of the largest volcanic eruptions ever. Because of this the small fishing towns cling to the sides of the cliffs and contrast against the red, volcanic rock. I stumbled across this small village while exploring the island on spring break.

Dune Running in Bornholm, Denmark

I traveled on a school trip to Bornholm, an island of Denmark south of Sweden. This island is known for its beauty. We biked all over the island for 2 days. At one point we stopped at a beach where the sand is famous. It is exported all over the world because it is the finest sand in existence and is used for hour glasses. When you step on it a certain way, it squeaks, but it is fine enough that you can run down the vast dunes and feel like you are flying.

Cotacachi, Ecuador

This photo was taken on a hike I took climbing to the top of the volcano Cotacachi, part of the Andean mountains. This was a 10-hour hike: 6 hours up and 4 hours down. It was a long journey, but offered some amazing views. We started before the sun was up and once we climbed long enough we got above the clouds and could see all the nearby peaks, 5 in total, peaking above the clouds. We made the whole journey and even got to touch the snow at the top of the mountain. This was an amazing experience because this is the mountain I lived under and looked up at for 6 months.

Drinking Fountain in Rome

One of my stops on my spring break was to Rome during their Easter Holiday. This picture was taken within the Vatican City on Easter Sunday. Throughout Rome and all of Italy, there are water fountains along the side of the road that you can just walk up to and drink. This woman had no second thoughts to fill her cupped hands and drink from the fountain. After I witnessed her drinking I tasted the water and was amazed at how clean it was and tasted.

This was a performance at the Narita Drum Festival during our Spring 2007 IES Tokyo Semester in Japan. The festival takes place every year in April about one and a half hours away from Tokyo (by train), not too far from Narita Airport.

Carara National Park

This is one of my favorite pictures from my trip to Costa Rica. We were in Carara National Park having a field lecture, when all of a sudden a black iguana strolled up very close to our group. It then made its way into the grass, and I couldn't help myself and took out my camera and snapped this shot.

Cotacachi, Ecuador

This photo was taken in the main square in the city where I spent 6 months of my junior year. This was taken when the newly elected president came to speak in Cotacachi. It is only the second time a president has come to this city and the first in many years. It was a significant day because President Correa was showing his support to the people of Cotacachi, predominantly populated by indigenous people. The flag in the picture represents one of the largest indigenous groups in Ecuador and this picture captures the political participation of the city.

I took this photo out my flat window at Goldsmiths College, London. I heard a lot of commotion and looked up to see a motorcyclist had just collided with a woman. I, too, had gotten hit a few months before but only had the wind knocked out of me. This photo was a reminder of my own experience.

Karijini, Australia

Not only was this natural pool a phenomenal sight during the day, but it was gorgeous at night as well. During my Easter Break I took a trip north along the west coast of Australia. One of the nights that we spent in Karijini National Park, we went on a night swim in this natural pool. Here we could see the beauty of the sky while lying on our backs in the warm water, one of my most memorable experiences while abroad.

"The Chalk Man"

In the Place Royale in the center of Nantes there is a man we dubbed "the chalk man" who, everyday, would create beautiful chalk portraits on the ground simply by copying a picture. Napoleon is one of the great figures of French history, and the man who created this picture has become an important part of Nantes because of his talented artwork, regardless of the fact that he also represents the poor that exist even in first-world countries.

Octopus is a central part of the Greek diet. Seeing them hanging out to dry after being freshly caught was a common sight especially in small fishing villages. This photo was taken on the Island of Santorini in the middle of the Aegean.

Monteverde, Costa Rica

This picture does a good job of showing how dense the rain forests of Costa Rica are. This picture was taken in Monteverde as our class was crossing a sky bridge through the forest canopy.

Mombasa, Kenya

I took this picture from my host family's car as we were driving to the bus stop in Mombasa, a coastal island city of Kenya, for me to catch the bus back to Nairobi. These men were hand carting a large load of produce across the main, and only, bridge from my side of the mainland.

This is a photograph taken of the Kinkakuji, or Golden Pavilion. Located in Kyoto, the top two stories of the temple are covered in gold leaf. On a short trip to Kyoto, my friends and I made a point to stop and see it. We were glad we did, as it was easily the most impressive temple we saw.

The Bicycles of Denmark

Denmark is known for its bicycles. Everyone commutes to work by either train or bicycle. Even in some of the harshest winter conditions you will see Danes dressed in stylish skirts, leggings, and beautiful scarves and hats. The bicycles are such a calming experience, vastly different from the honking and screeching of tires that is city life in the U.S. Denmark's vast use of public transportation, their giant windmills that collect the large amount of wind this coastal country receives, and their conservation of expensive water allow them to be a leading country in environmentalism. These bicycles are a symbol of one of the hippest, yet most forward thinking countries in our world.

I studied at the London College of Fashion on Oxford Street & was able to nab tickets to London Fashion Week! Not only was I able to study in an internationally influential fashion city like London, but also honored to witness the inside of the fashion industry. Even as an outsider, my exposure to the London fashion scene allowed me to embrace and celebrate my studies and truly engage in the creative energy of the city.

Sneaking Up on a Guard - Copenhagen, Denmark

This is a guard of the Danish Royal Guard, monitoring the Queen's home, known as Amelienborg. They are not allowed to smile, so it is fun to try to make them. You know the Queen is home if the Danish flag is waving. I saw the Queen twice while in Denmark. The first was on her birthday when she came out at noon with her family and waved to her people. The second time was on the day of the birth of her granddaughter. She was viewing Napoli at the Royal Theater, a ballet I was seeing for my History of European Ballet class, watching a good friend in her 100th performance.

This was one of the first pictures I took. This is a typical view during a car ride through Costa Rica. It was early enough so the clouds hadn't covered the spectacular view. As beautiful as this was, I wish they would put up some guard rails.

Wales

This photo was taken on public transport in Wales on my way to Mold. I don't remember this particular woman's name, but I remember laughing the entire way as the bus driver knew everyone who got on and kept up a running commentary with each. Most travelers were elderly because they could catch the bus for free.

Nairobi

This picture is from the Kibera slum in Nairobi. It is the largest slum in Africa and is home to over one million people. I went there with my classmates to play a game of soccer with the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy, and we were lucky enough to get a tour of the slum by some of the people who live there.

Palm Sunday in Cotacachi, Ecuador

This picture is from Palm Sunday which I attended (fully dressed in the indigenous clothes) with my host family. The whole town, carrying their palms, walks out to the entrance of the "city of peace" and holds a small service by the 3-D statue of the 8-point sun and then parades back into town for a service in the church. This really shows the sense of community and importance of religion in the area.

This photo was taken candidly on Easter Sunday on my way to the tube after attending a service at Westminster Abbey. Celebrating the holiday in a place where the people of England have been worshiping for over 1000 years was remarkably surreal and personal. That Easter Sunday overseas broadened my perspective of rituals and redefined how I choose to celebrate holidays.

Lamu Island, Kenya

This picture is the beach front on Lamu Island on the northern coastline of Kenya. From what I was told, there are only 3 cars on the island, owned by the government officials. Everyone else uses donkeys, or the dhows seen in the background, for their transportation. I was lucky enough to get to ride one down the beach.

Trim Castle, Ireland

While studying abroad in Belfast, our program allowed us a weekend with our host family in Navan, which is just north of Dublin. My host family took us to see the Trim Castle which was not too far from their home. This picture is of one of the gate towers of the outer wall of the castle. While we were there we found out that Trim castle was used during the filming of Braveheart. The day that we went to Trim there was an incredible fog, this picture was taken at 2:30 in the afternoon.
