Academic Support
Tutoring
Does talking about course material with a peer help you understand it better? Do you seek one-on-one assistance in a course? If so, the Tutoring Program at Denison University might be able to help. Best of all, Denison's Tutoring Program is FREE for students.
What is the Tutoring Program?
It is a program designed for students who are seeking additional assistance to improve their academic performance. Tutors are available for almost all academic subjects. Denison tutors are students who have been selected by academic department faculty and have completed a tutor training program conducted by the Academic Support & Enrichment Center.
When Should I get a tutor?
As you experience difficulty in a course, speak with your professor first, and then request a tutor to assist you. The Academic Support & Enrichment Center will contact a tutor for you and work with you and the tutor to set up a study session. Faculty will be notified that you are receiving a tutor in their course. Regular tutoring sessions throughout the semester are expected when you request a tutor. New tutor requests will not be honored after the 12th week of the semester. However, walk-in tutoring will be available on the Reading & Study Day before final exams begin.
How can I request a tutor?
You can request a tutor via the web at http://www.denison.edu/acad-support/tutoring/tutorapply.html and fill out the necessary information. Or, you can stop by the Academic Support & Enrichment Center, Doane 104, and fill out a tutor request form. Finally, you can e-mail Tutor with a request. Please indicate the course number and professor for which you are requesting a tutor.
How do I pay a tutor?
You don't! The Academic Support & Enrichment Center will pay for your tutoring expenses. Each time you meet, the tutor will ask you to sign a Tutor Verification/Summary form to track your tutor appointments so that the university can pay him or her.
What should I bring to the tutoring session?
Before meeting with your tutor, think about why you are requesting tutoring. Do you struggle with course concepts, have difficulty successfully completing homework assignments/exercises, want to talk about an upcoming test, hope to go over your class notes with a tutor, etc.? Jotting down a list of questions to discuss with the tutor might be helpful. Determining the purpose of the tutoring session is an effective way to prepare. When you meet your tutor, bring course-related materials (textbook, class notes, handouts, previous exams, study guides, etc.) that will help make the tutoring session as productive as possible.
What are other sources of help?
You should meet with your professors and faculty advisor regularly. The Writing Center is another resource to help with papers and assignments. Studywise sessions are also offered to help all students polish their study skills. Check out http://www.denison.edu/acad-support/studywise.shtml for a current Studywise schedule. Finally, feel free to visit the Academic Support & Enrichment Center (Doane 104) to talk about study strategies and learn about other sources of academic support.
