What Clients need to do
Student clients should come prepared to a meeting with a Writing Center Consultant.
You do this by:
- Making the appointment as far ahead of the assignment's due date as possible. The most effective writing does not usually occur under duress.
- Making every effort to understand the assignment before coming to the meeting. This may mean asking for clarification from the instructor.
- Bringing a hard copy of the assignment to the meeting.
- Being receptive to consultant suggestions. It is difficult to help someone who doesn't want it.
- Being willing to talk about your ideas. Consultants can't and won't tell you how or what to think. They will help you figure out what you think.
- Finding a consultant with whom you work well and trying to work regularly with that person.
- Not expecting magic to happen in one meeting. Your ideas and writing may require more time to develop than half of an hour.
- Not expecting consultants to evaluate your paper. Instructors are the evaluators.
Faculty clients should contact the Director, Brenda Boyle, (587-5770 or boyleb@denison.edu) for any requests. Also, see Section 3 of this site, "For Instructors," for additional resources.
