Denison students work closely with professors

Accomplished, Creative Mentors
Many of our professors are award-winning scholars who bring their love of knowledge to Denison. Through innovative teaching methods, they incorporate an array of learning experiences such as field trips, hands-on research projects, and study abroad opportunities to provide fresh perspectives and real-world insight. For example:

  • Your political science professor might take you to New Hampshire for firsthand encounters with campaigning candidates
  • Your geology professor might take you on a field trip to the mountains to study geological formations
  • You might visit a local art gallery to learn about art expression through our art professor's  personally designed course, Tattoo You, Popular Culture, Graphic Arts, and Personal Expression
You'll interact with faculty who bring passion, expertise, and fun to the classroom, such as:
  • Dr. Emmett Buell, Jr., political science, who is highly sought by national media for his views on presidential nominating races, often arranging for students to follow candidates on the campaign trail.
  • Dr. Carol Goland, environmental studies, who actively studies archaeology, ecology, and agricultural issues in Peru.
  • Dr. David Baker, english, who is a past winner of a Guggenheim fellowship recognizing his excellence in poetry.
  • Dr. Tom Schultz, biology, who consults for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service researching the relationship between water quality and insect prevalence.
  • Sandra Mathern-Smith, dance, who collaborates with a variety of artists to create concert-length pieces that blend video, live music, poetic text, and set designs.
  • Dr. Mary Tuominen, sociology/anthropology and women's studies, who explores issues relating to political mobilization of child-care providers.

Students have the opportunity to engage in collaborative research projects with accomplished faculty members

Through interactive learning opportunities and an 11-to-1 student/teacher ratio, (Denison ranks No.1 by The Princeton Review in encouraging classroom discussions), your professors will work closely with you as mentors and friends to build your potential.

"In the classrooms at Denison, we have such great energy that fosters more participation."
-Dr. Ching-Chu Hu, Assistant Professor of Music
