Join fellow Denisonians for our second annual gathering at the Starz Denver Film Festival on Opening Night, Thursday, November 12, 2009. The featured film is the highly anticipated "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire." The film is the first to win both the Sundance and Toronto audience awards. That means the Starz selection committee has a good chance of four Oscar winners in a row, having featured "Brokeback Mountain", "Juno" and "Slumdog Millionaire" at the three most recent festivals. Local luminaries—and the film's producers—Sarah Siegel-Magness and Gary Magness, will attend, as will director Lee Daniels, and the film's young star, Gabourey Sidibe. (See ** below for more information about the film.)

**Already receiving Oscar buzz, Precious is the story of a morbidly obese 16-year-old girl, pregnant by her father and horribly abused by her mother, who finds a glimmer of hope in the love of a teacher trying to inspire her and shepherd her toward a new life.

"The story of abuse in our community and in many communities is a taboo subject. The story and arc of possibility (in Precious) is an evergreen and timeless story that I think this generation, the generation before us, and many generations to come will be entertained and inspired by." - Executive Producer Oprah Winfrey

"What it did for me as I was watching the film and I got to the end of it, I felt such relief, such a weight off of me because I made it, and that is what I think people who have been through it (abuse) will feel. When they see it, they are going to be like, wow. I made it through." - Executive Producer Tyler Perry
