Baseball: Big Red close season with sweep of No. 23 PSU-Behrend

Bill Sanders was 4 for 7 with 3 runs scored against PSU-Behrend on Sunday.

Denison closed the book on the 2009 schedule Sunday afternoon with a sweep of 23rd ranked Penn State-Behrend.  Denison took game one, 11-3, and pulled ahead late for a 7-3 victory in game two.  The Big Red end the year with a 21-19 record.

In game one, Denison shattered a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning by scoring eight runs off seven hits.  David Holmes (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) got things going with a two-run single and Alex Horn (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) would follow with an RBI double down the line in right field.  After a walk was drawn by Andrew Mahle (Belle Meade, N.J./Montgomery), Andy Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) laced a pinch-hit, bases loaded double into the gap in left-center, scoring Horn and Holmes.  Evan Nicholson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) would extend the break-out inning with a two-run double to left field, giving DU an 11-3 lead.

Nicholson was 3 for 5 in game one with three RBIs. Holmes and Horn were both 2 for 5 with two RBIs and one run scored, apiece.  Chris Fries (Cooper City, Fla./American Heritage) picked up the victory in relief.  He pitched the seventh inning for Denison and allowed one run off two hits.

In the nightcap, DU took a 3-0 lead thanks to a run in the first inning and two in the fourth.  Behrend would counter with three runs in the fifth inning.  Dave Miller's RBI double down the line in left knotted the game at 3-3.

In the bottom of the sixth inning DU took the lead back for good when Justin Vaske (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) led off the inning with a walk.  Afer moving to third on a wild pitch, Vaske would score after an error by Behrend second baseman Ed Kessler.  DU would tack on two runs runs in the bottom of the seventh to set the final at 6-3.

The victory went to Adam Bodary (Beverly Hills, Mich./W.E. Groves) who improved his record to 3-0.  The win in game one today gave locked up Denison's seventh 20-win season out of the last eight years.
