The Denison Big Red rebounded from a 12-11 loss in game one with a record-setting 26-12 victory in game two over Earlham College on Saturday night. The twinbill, which began just after 5 p.m. wrapped up minutes before midnight from McBride Stadium. Over the course of the two games, Earham and Denison combined for 62 hits and 61 runs.
The opening game saw the Quakers score three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to complete a come-from-behind victory. Justin Held was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Kevin Teague hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Aidan Lucas suffered the loss and fell to 2-3 on the year. Andy Jackson earned the win in relief for Earlham.
In the second game the hit parade continued and after three games Denison held an 11-10 lead. In the third inning DU scored six runs to take a 17-10 lead. The Big Red would tack on nine more runs over the final three innings. The 26 runs set a new Denison single-game record for runs scored in a game, breaking the old mark, a 24-0 win over Salve Regina in 2002.
Evan Nicholson went 5-for-5 with five runs scored and one RBI in game two. Lucas was 3-for-6 with 7 RBIs and Justin Vaske was 4-for-6 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Lucas' seven runs batted in moved him into second place on the Denison single-season list for RBIs with 50. Drew Shamrock holds the record with 63 RBIs in 2004. Patrick Walker picked up the win for DU in relief. It was his first career victory.
Denison now sits at 18-18 overall and will travel to Marietta on Sunday (April 26) for a 6 p.m. game against the Pioneers. In NCAC West Division play, the Big Red have completed their schedule with an 8-8 record.
