Baseball: No. 8 Heidelberg tops Big Red

DateApril 23, 2009
LocationTIFFIN, Ohio

Freshman David Holmes (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) went 4-for-4 and Park Smith (Warren, N.J./Pingry School) drove in three runs but it was enough as eighth-ranked Heidelberg put three runs on the board in the final two innings to pull off a 7-4 victory over the Big Red baseball team.

Denison trailed by one at 4-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning but Rick Lizcano's RBI single scored Biagio Boytim giving the Berg a 5-3 lead.  In the home half of the eighth inning Boytim and Jason Lash added back-to-back RBI doubles to give their team a four-run cushion.

In the top of the ninth Denison mounted a comeback when Evan Nicholson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) reached base after being hit with a pitch from Heidelberg closer Andy Lowe.  Justin Held (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve) would follow with a single and Smith's base hit would score Nicholson. With the tying run now at home plate, Lowe would strike out the final two Big Red hitters to pick up his eighth save of the season.

The Berg improved to 27-7 with the win while Denison drops to 17-17.  The Big Red will travel to Earlham on Saturday (April 25) for a doubleheader with the Quakers that is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
