The Denison baseball team closed out their four-game series against Wabash College with a doubleheader split on Sunday in Granville. The Big Red snapped a six-game skid with a 5-4 victory in game won but the Little Giants rebounded to win the nightcap 8-2.

Down 1-0 in the opener Denison took their first lead of the series with a three-run second frame. Wabash was able to claw back into the game and tie the score at 4-4 in the top of the sixth inning. However, DU answered in the bottom of the frame when freshman Andrew Mahle (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) laced a single down the left line that scored Zach Huttie (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) from second.

Sophomore Freddy Marino (Shaker Heights, Ohio/University School) retired the side in the seventh to earn his third win of the year. Marino went 1.2 hitless innings out of the bullpen with one strikeout. Rookie David Holmes (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) went 3-for-3 at the dish with two runs scored while classmate Evan Nicholson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

In game two, the Little Giants erupted for three runs in both the first and fourth innings en route to the win. The Big Red trimmed the margin to 5-2 on a two-RBI double by senior Andy Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) in the bottom of the second. Wabash expanded their advantage back to six when Matt Dodaro blasted a three-run bomb to left center in the fourth.

Junior Alex Horn (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) went 2-for-3 with a run scored in game two while Park Smith (Warren, N.J./The Pingry School), Aidan Lucas (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) and Holmes accounted for Denison's other hits. Lucas got the start and went four innings in the losing effort. Patrick Walker (Acton, Mass./Concord Academy) pitched three hitless inning in relief with two strikeouts.

Wabash's Jake Thomas was just a double away from hitting the cycle. Thomas went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs. Chris Deig and John Holm both went 2-for-3 with Deig crossing the plate three times.

Denison is 17-16 overall and 7-7 in the North Coast Athletic Conference West Division. The Big Red return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Tiffin, Ohio to take on Heidelberg University. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
