Freshman Tyler Vaske (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) retired three straight in the bottom of the ninth inning with the potential game-tying run just 90 feet away to secure a 10-9 win for the Big Red over Washington & Jefferson, improving their overall season record to 16-9.
Vaske was the eighth Big Red pitcher to take the hill on Wednesday night and after entering the contest with a 10-6 lead the Presidents came up with four singles and a hit batsman, all with no outs, to get within one run of knotting the game at 10-10. Vaske dug deep and induced a pop out to the catcher, a pop out to the shortstop and a fly out to left field to send DU home with their seventh win out of their last nine contests.
Sophomore Danny Pritz (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) stroked a two-run triple in the sixth inning and junior designated hitter Aidan Lucas (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Twp.) hit his fourth home run of the season to dead centerfield in the second inning. In all, DU pounded out 14 hits while W&J finished with 11 hits but were plagued by five errors.
Denison will return to the diamond on Friday when they open a four-game series with NCAC West foe, Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware, Ohio. The Big Red are 6-0 in the west division while the Bishops enter the series 5-3. Both Friday and Saturday's doubleheaders will start at noon.
