With the Big Red trailing 6-3 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, DU hitters put six runs on the board and got some clutch pitching down the stretch to squeeze out a 9-7 victory over Benedictine University on Thursday in Ft. Myers, Fla. The win improves the Big Red's record to 6-2.
Freshman Freddy Marino (Shaker Heights, Ohio/University School) got the win in relief of Nick Smith (Mirror Lake, N.H./Holderness). Marino pitched 1.2 innings and allowed just one run off one hit. In the eighth inning Mike Hundley (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) took over with runners on base and induced an inning ending double play. The ninth inning was all about sophomore Aidan Lucas (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Twp.) who took the hill and abruptly struck out the side to earn his first save of the season.
John Schleer (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet) led all Denison hitters with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. Park Smith (Warren, N.J./The Pingry School) was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Justin Held (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) also added a pair of hits in five at-bats.
Denison will take on Eastern Nazarene University on Friday at 12 p.m.
