Baseball: Heidelberg stops Big Red

No. 24 Heidelberg pounded out 15 hits, four of which went for extra-bases en route to a 7-2 win over the Denison Big Red on Tuesday afternoon in Tiffin, Ohio.
Heidelberg led 7-0 until the Big Red got on the board in the top of the ninth inning thanks to a two-run homer by sophomore Park Smith (Warren, N.J./The Pingry School). Also having a strong day at the plate was junior shortstop Andy Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) who was 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Freshman pitcher Bobby Giarratani (Winthrop,Mass./Bishop Fenwick) was charged with the loss for Denison. He pitched seven innings and allowed six runs off 14 hits while striking out three. First-year Dale McOsker (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) pitched the eighth inning for Denison and allowed one run.
The winning pitcher was Heidelberg's Everett Thomas who moved to 5-1 on the year with his nine inning, six-hit performance. Second baseman Gar Keen was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and third baseman Willie Brechun went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored.
Denison is 23-13 and will host Kenyon College on Wednesday in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
