Baseball: Park Smith Fires No-Hitter in Denison win over North Park

Park Smith fired his first collegiate no-hitter on Sunday in a 10-0 victory over North Park University. It was the first no-hitter by a DU pitcher since 2005.

Date: March 2, 2008
Location: MILLINGTON, Tenn.

In their second brilliant pitching performance under a 24-hour period, Denison sophomore Park Smith (Warren, N.J./The Pingry School) fired his first collegiate no-hitter in a 10-0 victory over North Park University (Ill.) on Sunday at USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn.

Following the Big Red's five-run seventh inning, DU held a 10-0 lead and the game was stopped due to the 10-run rule that was in effect.  Smith struck out five batters and walked just one, facing only one over the minimum.  This was on the heels of JD Wyborny's (Walnut Creek, Calif./Monte Vista) complete-game, two-hit performance on Saturday night against Rhodes College.

DU pounded out 11 hits led by freshman Peter Krieger who was 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBIs.  Kevin Teague (Fairfax Station, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) had two hits and two RBIs while senior Tony Christopher (Moreland Hills, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) and Tim LaBolt (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township) both had two hits and combined for two RBIs and three runs scored.

In his first career start at catcher, sophomore Dave McGinnis (Columbus, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) had the pleasure of catching Smith's no-hitter.

It was the first no-hitter by a Denison pitcher since Drew Shamrock blanked Wabash College 8-0 on April 16, 2005.

Denison returns home from Tennessee with a 2-1 record and will gear up for the Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, Fla. on March 9-15.
