Baseball: Denison picks up road win at Otterbein

Tony Christopher's RBI double in the ninth gave Denison the lead for good.

Date: April 8, 2008
Location: WESTERVILLE, Ohio

The Denison offense exploded for seven runs in the final three innings to cap off a 8-3 victory over Otterbein College on Tuesday night at Fishbaugh Field in Westerville.

Denison trailed 3-1 heading into the top of the eighth inning when Kevin Teague (Fairfax Station, va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) led off the inning with a single to left field.  After a pinch hit walk by Tim LaBolt (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township), Len Mills (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) hit a grounder to third base that was thrown over the head of the first baseman.  Two runs would score on the error and Mills would end up on third before being stranded.

In the top of the ninth DU added four runs thanks to two Cardinal errors.  Tony Christopher (Moreland Hills, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) drove in one with a double to left while Teague and Mills accounted for two other RBIs.

Denison's Freddy Marino (Shaker Heights, Ohio/University School) got the start and pitched six innings.  He allowed eight hits and three runs while walking two.  Freshman Bobby Giarratani (Winthrop, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) got the victory in relief of Marino.  He worked the final three innings and allowed just one hit.  The loss was charged to Otterbein reliever J.J. Matthews who pitched the decisive eighth inning.  Matthews gave up the go-ahead runs but neither were earned due to the throwing error.

Park Smith (Warren, N.J./The Pingry School) led Denison at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one run scored and a walk.  Freshman Mark Mazur (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton La Salle) made the most of his start in left field, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Denison's next game will be on Thursday (April 10) when they host Heidelberg College at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati.
