The Big Red completed their four-game series with Wittenberg University by sweeping Monday's doubleheader. Denison rallied for a 4-3 win in game one and dominated game two, 8-0. The wins improve the Big Red's overall record to 11-4 overall and 4-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference west division.
In the opener Denison scored all four runs in the top of the sixth inning off four hits to take the lead. Mike Hundley (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) pitched a scoreless sixth inning and Aidan Lucas (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Twp.) followed with two strikeouts in the seventh for his second save, helping DU to the win.
Alex Horn (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) followed an Andy Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) walk in the sixth inning with a double and Danny Pritz (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) stroked a two-run single to get Denison on the board. Tony Christopher (Moreland Hills, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) and Peter Krieger (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) would both add RBI singles to account for the Big Red's big inning.
Park Smith (Warren, N.J./The Pingry School) pitched the first five innings and earned the win, bumping his record to 2-1. He allowed only six hits and struck out three.
The second contest saw the Big Red jump over Wittenberg early with six runs in the first two innings. Freshman Nick Smith (Mirror Lake, N.H./Holderness School) went the distance and allowed just five hits with only one of those going for extra bases. Smith did not walk a batter and faced just 24 batters on the day.
Tim LaBolt (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Twp.) went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Lucas and Kevin Teague (Fairfax Station, Va./St. Stephens and St. Agnes) were both 2-for-4 and drove in five of Denison's eight runs.
Denison will face Muskingum College on Wednesday (March 26) at 7 p.m. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Tuesday (March 25), but was moved over the weekend to accommodate a Muskie scheduling conflict.
