Baseball: Heidelberg tops Big Red at Great American Ballpark

Park Smith went 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs against Heidelberg at Great American Ballpark.

Date: April 10, 2008
Location: CINCINNATI

Denison certainly had the mascot in their favor.  For years in the late 1970's Cincinnati's Big Red Machine tortured opposing pitchers on the banks of the Ohio River.  Today the Big Red's machine may have sputtered but it didn't spoil a magical day on the grand stage.

Heidelberg College scored three runs in the top of the fifth and would add four more in the eighth and ninth to pull off an 8-4 victory over the Denison Big Red on Thursday at Great American Ballpark.

Playing in front of their closest friends and family, the Denison team made their share of memories throughout the day.

Sophomore first baseman Park Smith got Denison on the board first with his double to the gap in left center, scoring Danny Pritz.  Smith would strike again in the third inning thanks to a single to center that scored Andy Johnson who led off the inning with a bunt single.

Those two runs would be all Denison would muster until the eighth when Alex Horn started off the inning with a triple to right field.  Smith would deliver for the third time, this time finding the hole at shortstop, scoring Horn.  A ground out to short by Tim LaBolt drove in Denison's final run.

Heidelberg's Brian Koehl got the win, pitching five innings.  Freshman Jason Lash led the Student Princes with a two-run, inside the park home run in the eighth inning.  He was 3-for-4 with three RBIs.  The loss was tagged to Denison starter JD Wyborny who pitched 4.1 innings and allowed four runs.
