Freshman Brett Tiberi notched 15 points and six boards in 28 minutes of action in DU's two-point loss to Hiram on Saturday.
Hiram College overcame a season-high 13 three-pointers and a late-game charge by the Denison Big Red as they escaped Granville with a 70-68 victory in front of a deafening crowd at Livingston Gymnasium on Saturday.
The Big Red's 13 treys was only the fourth time the squad as made double-digit triples in the last five seasons. The feat was also the most since 2006 when DU sank 14 from behind the arc in a win at Oberlin (Jan. 11).
Things looked grim for Denison early in the contest as the Terriers were able to rattle off 11 unanswered points in the opening four minutes. However, a pair of threes by freshman guard Brett Tiberi (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) sparked an impressive 10-2 run trimmed the margin to three (13-10) with 8:50 left in the first. After Hiram widened their lead back to seven with a Chris Roberts jumper and a pair of Hassan Muhammed free throws, Tiberi drained another trey and sophomore Larry Farmer (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) scored on back-to-back possessions to knot the game at 17-17 and forced Hiram to call a timeout with 5:23 remaining in the opening frame.
Out of the stoppage, the Terriers regained control and engineered a 16-3 run that was capped off by a Glenn Campbell three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to end the half. Hiram entered the locker room with a 33-20 advantage.
Like the first period, the second half started slow for Denison as they quickly found themselves in a 17-point hole (39-22). However, a few defensive stops and an impressive display from behind the arc helped the Big Red close the gap to 43-36 with 15:48 to play. Following a three-pointer by Hiram's Nick Russo, Farmer recorded a block and turned it into a three-ball of his own on the other end. On the ensuing possession, the Gurnee, Ill. native pulled down a defensive rebound and drilled his second straight long ball to make it a four-point affair (46-42).
After Babajide Eniola increased the Terrior lead to six, junior guard Chirs Luther (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) knocked down a three-pointer and a fall away jumper to bring the Big Red within one at the midway point of the period. On the next possession, first-year Mike Garabedian (La Grange, Ill.Nazareth Academy) stripped the ball away from Ian Pfouts and converted the long ball to give Denison their first lead of the day (50-48).
DU held tightly onto their small lead, but with 7:44 on the clock Hiram's Deon Milton drained a three to tied the contest at 54-54. Milton's trey ignited a 17-2 run that spanned roughly five minutes and gave the Terriors another double-digit advantage (68-56).
However, this Big Red wouldn't go down without a fight. Another triple by Luther kicked off a two minute spurt that would get the home team right back in the contest. Denison slowly chipped away and following a pair of foul shots by first-year Jim Leffew (Vero Beach Fla./Vero Beach) that made it 69-65, the 5-7 freshman drained a three-pointer with 1:41 to make it a 69-68 contest.
After Milton made one-of-two shots from the stripe to make it 70-68, the Big Red were unable to find the bottom of the net on their final possession as they suffered their second heart-breaking loss in as many games.
Farmer finished the night with 16 points and eight rebounds, both team highs, while Luther chipped in 15 tallies in 31 minutes of play. Tiberi played a career-high 28 minutes and dropped 15 points and grabbed six rebounds, both career bests. Tiberi finished the game 5-of-11 (46 percent) from behind the arc.
Roberts led all scorers with 21 points while Eniola added 14 tallies and nine rebounds.
The Big Red shot 21-for-53 (40 percent) from the floor including 13-of-31 (42 percent) from long range while the Hiram was 25-for-52 () from the field and shot 53 percent (8-for-15) from behind the arc. Hiram held a slight 33-30 edge on the glass over DU while both teams committed 12 turnovers and received 26 points from their bench.
Denison falls to 7-16 on the year and 4-10 in the NCAC while the Terriers improve to 15-8 on the season and 10-4 in the league. The Big Red return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Earlham College for a men's and women's doubleheader. Tip-off for the men's game is slated for 8 p.m.
