Chris Luther tied a career-high with 24 points against Oberlin on Sunday.
Ryan Magiera's 3-pointer from the corner with 35 seconds remaining helped Oberlin College to a 64-63 victory over the Denison Big Red on Sunday afternoon in Granville.
With Denison leading 63-61 following a pair of Chris Luther (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) free throws with 55 seconds remaining Oberlin took over possession and ran the clock down 20 seconds. That's when a driving Mike Loll found Magiera who would connect on his second 3-point basket of the game.
DU would call a time out with 29 seconds left and another with 16 seconds to set up their final play. Senior point guard Pat Sullivan (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) drove the lane with six seconds left but a collapsing Oberlin defense surrounded Sullivan making it impossible to find an outlet. Sullivan let loose a twisting layup that found the rim, nearly giving the Big Red a buzzer-beating victory.
The game saw 13 lead changes and four tie-game situations. Denison led early in the first half but a run by the Yeomen would lead to a five point halftime advantage for the visitors. The Big Red responded early in the second half and regained the lead at the 17:36 mark following a Jim Leffew (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) 3-pointer. That would fuel a 14-3 run by Denison that would last until the 12:25 mark in the second half.
Oberlin would counter that Denison run with a methodical push that would result in their first lead since the opening minutes of the half. Josh Merritt's layup with 4:11 left put the Yeomen on top 56-55 but Denison's Caleb McFerren (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville) came right back with a driving lay up of his own to take the lead back. The first of what would be two game changing 3-pointers would come off the hands of Jordan Beard with 3:13 left. The basket gave Oberlin a two-point lead. A field goal by Sullivan and the Luther free throws would put Denison back in the lead but set the stage for Magiera's game-winner with 35 ticks left.
Denison was led in scoring by Luther who tied his career-high with 24-points. He was 7-of-13 from the field and also led the team with eight rebounds in 35 minutes. McFerren and first-year guard Casey Stockton (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) would both chip in eight points apiece to help with the Denison scoring load.
Oberlin's Magiera, Loll and Beard all scored 14 points and Merritt finished with 10 points to pace the Yeomen. Oberlin shot 51 percent from the field while the Big Red hit on 39 percent of their field goal tries. DU was 9-for-20 from beyond the arc and won the rebounding battle 33-27.
Denison falls to 3-10 overall and to 0-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Oberlin moves to 4-8 and 1-3 in the conference. The Big Red's next game will be on Wednesday (Jan. 14) when they travel to Kenyon College for an 8 p.m. tip-off.
