Mike Garabedian scored 13 points and registered four assists and four steals, both season-highs, in a nine-point victory at Oberlin. The 13-point outburst marked his sixth double-digit performance of the season.

The Denison University men's basketball team went mistake free in the opening 20 minutes and forced Oberlin College into 10 first period turnovers en route to a 73-64 victory on Saturday afternoon. The win is the Big Red's fourth in the last five games and moves them into a tie for sixth place in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

After a three-pointer by Oberlin's Joe Dilworth broke a 5-5 tie, sophomore Larry Farmer (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) sparked a 16-2 run with a slam dunk after pulling down an offensive rebound. Junior Chris Luther (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) capped off the run with a triple, making it a 21-10 contest and forcing the Yeoman to call a timeout. Luther tallied seven points and pulled down four boards during the spurt.

Coming out of the stoppage, freshman Josh Leuchtag (Houston, Texas/Lamar) drove the lane and scored to give Denison a 13-point lead. Oberlin was able to trim the deficit to eight, but a seven unanswered tallies by DU made it a 15-point affair (30-15) with four and a half left in the frame. The Big Red continued the aggressive play an entered the intermission with a 40-23 advantage.

The Big Red made 12 trips to the free throw line while Oberlin failed to make an appearance at the charity stripe.

In the second frame, Denison opened up a 23-point advantage (54-31) on a Jeremy Stuhlfauth (Columbus, Ohio/Whetstone) lay-up with 15:20 left in regulation. However, the Yeomen generated an 11-2 run, capped off by a Jordan Beard trey, to trim the margin to 57-42.

After senior Pat Sullivan (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) scored a bucket with nine minutes left in the half, Oberlin orchestrated another 11-2 spurt that shrunk the deficit to 10 (65-55) with 3:25 left to play.

DU was able to regain a 13-point lead after first-year Mike Garabedian (La Grange, Ill./Nazareth Academy) converted a traditional three-point-play. Denison was able to preserve the win after knocking down 5-of-8 free throws over the final 1:19.

The Big Red shot 23-for-51 (45 percent) from the field and was 20-for-27 (74 percent) from the foul line. Denison also committed a season-low six turnovers and scored 29 tallies off 15 Oberlin giveaways. The Yeomen were 57 percent from the floor (24-for-42) but only made eight trips to the stripe, converting six of those attempts.

Luther led DU with 14 points and five rebounds while Garabedian dropped 13 tallies, pulled down five boards, dished off four helpers and made four thefts. Sullivan also recorded 11 points and handed out a game-high five assists.

Beard led all scorers with 29 points on 10-of-16 (63 percent) from the floor including 7-of-11 (64 percent) from behind the arc. Oberlin's Josh Merritt added 11 tallies while James Tompsett pulled down a team-high four rebounds.

With the win, the Big Red improve to 7-14 overall and 4-8 in the conference while Oberlin falls to 4-17 on the year and 1-11 in the NCAC. Denison returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Wooster, Ohio to take on the College of Wooster Scots. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
