Larry Farmer scored 15 points in the second half and finished with 22 in Denison's double OT loss at Wooster.
Wooster's Justin Hallowell drilled a 3-pointer as time expired in regulation and after 10 minutes of extra basketball the Fighting Scots managed to hold off a feisty, determined Big Red squad 102-92 from Timken Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
After battling back from a 11-point first half deficit, Denison took the lead for the first time with just over nine minutes to play in the second half and the two teams would battle tooth-and-nail down the stretch. A Pat Sullivan (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) jumper with 57 seconds remaining gave DU their largest lead at 70-65.
Still leading by five with 20 seconds remaining, Wooster's Marty Bidwell cut the Denison lead to two with 14 seconds left. The next 14 seconds must have felt like 14 days for the upstart Big Red.
After a quick foul, Chris Luther (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) calmly drained two free throws to give his club a four-point lead with 12 seconds left. Wooster's Ian Franks scored quickly and fouled Luther who was 8-of-8 up to this point from the free throw line. He missed the first but would make the second, giving Denison a 3-point lead with six seconds left.
Wooster did not take a time out and from no more than 10 feet inside half court Hallowell lifted a well contested, desperation 3-pointer as time expired that found nothing but net.
Despite the sudden turn in momentum, Denison came out in the first overtime period unfazed. A Luther 3-pointer with 2:34 left gave the Big Red a two-point lead but on their next possession Bryan Wickliffe scored down low to tie the game at 85-85. Over the next 2:12 neither team would connect on one of their six combined field goal attempts, resulting in a second OT.
The Scots opened the new period strong and took a four point lead with 3:01 to play. Denison freshman Mike Garabedian (LaGrange, Ill./Nazareth Academy), who led DU with eight first half points, answered with a 3-pointer from the left wing to get Denison back within one at 90-89. The next 1:51 would be owned by Fighting Scots as they pieced together a 10-0 run by sinking 12 consecutive free throws to clinch a heart stopping victory for first-place Wooster.
Denison shot a blistering 63 percent from the field in the second half, hitting 15-of-24 shots which got them back into the game. Sophomore Larry Farmer (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) was brilliant, scoring 15 points while going 6-for-6 from the field in 18 minutes of play in the second half. Farmer would end up leading the Big Red in scoring with 22 points while going 8-for-12. Farmer also grabbed six rebounds, had two steals and three assists in 43 minutes.
Luther followed with 20 points in 44 minutes. Garabedian checked in with 14 points and Sullivan finished with 13.
Wooster was led by Hallowell who scored a game-high 30 points. He was trailed closely by Franks who netted 29 points. Twenty of their combined 59 points would come from the charity stripe as the two were 20-for-23 at the line.
In what was a tense battle for 50 minutes both teams were tremendous from the free throw line. Wooster hit 32-of-36 for 89 percent and Denison was 29-of-35 for 83 percent.
Both teams committed 15 turnovers and Wooster held a 37-31 edge on the boards. The win improves Wooster's record to 16-6 overall and 11-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Denison falls to 7-15 and 4-9 in league play.
